Match Report
Written by Ian McKayThis is the third attempt of posting my report ha ha.
Got through the report twice and thought I had saved it as a draft, but apparently not so here goes.
Arrived at Vauxhalls to be informed that I was picking against Brian. When asked how this happened I was told that this was down to Ken. Thanks for that.
We tossed and I won, so as it was equal sides I elected to take first pick. I decided to play three at the back, with Andy pushed right up front. I gave Blake and Gary a free role, just behind Andy and I asked my wild card pick, Hackett to cause havoc. I also selected the only recognised goalkeeper in attendance, Ken.
The game started and the yellows got off to a quick start and began to press, but my tactics seemed to be working and our defence was holding firm. The whites then started to get a foothold in the game and in fact should have taken the lead. Paul hit a wonderful cross which just needed a touch from Andy's head, but unfortunately he missed the ball completely. Shortly after this Paul was involved yet again, this time he had a shot which Brian, who was in goal, turned over the bar for a corner. Andy took the corner from the left and found Paul, who headed home at the far post.
The game continued to ebb and flow with the white team's defence holding firm. After a short time the yellows conceded another corner, this time from the right. Once again Andy took the corner and this time he found Gary also at the far post and he headed the ball firmly into the goal. Two nil and things were looking good, however as we all know, two nil is a dangerous score line and I really wanted a third, as I knew I had the second leg to come and Brian would have the advantage of first pick.
Just after half-time I decided to make a change, by asking Andy to move to left back, whilst I went up front. I knew Andy was a bit unhappy with this, however I had unbelievably been running around at the back and needed a rest.
The yellows were still pressing, but were still unable to make any real openings. From one attack, Gary picked the ball up on the edge of the area, he managed to play the ball to me, I turned and passed the ball forward past the last man, who was either Laurie or Brian. Blake raced onto the pass and calmly slotted the ball past Dave Woods and into the net. Three nil and I was feeling very satisfied.
Things got even better, in that after Gary had hit the bar from yet another corner, he then collected the ball on the halfway line and broke down the left wing, where he rolled the ball across the goal, for me to deflect into an empty net. Four nil and job done.
It is customary to select a man of the match, but I have to say that all my team played well. Neil and Phil in defence, Andy in his two positions and Blake and Gary, who just kept running all evening and in fairness Hackett rather than causing havoc was in fact very influential throughout the whole game. My man of the match however will have to be Ken, who once again produced a remarkable performance. Throughout the game he did the simple things, turning a shot from Chris over the bar and another couple of efforts around the post. His finest moment however was when he dropped the ball and then made three excellent saves in attempting to collect it safely into his grasp.
Brian this tie is not over, as having first pick can be a huge advantage, depending on who attends in the return leg.
