Match Report
Written by Nick EvansI'll start by firstly saying congratulations to Andy Eyres on the birth of his second child, good to see you back! Also nice to see Brian, still nursing an injury, who braved the weather to watch a 10 goal thriller between Carl and myself.
A better turn out tonight compared to recent weeks meant that the game was 7 a-side with Carl getting choice. Being 5-1 down from the previous leg, I think my team and I had all but written off my chances of pulling off a comeback to put me through to the next round of the captain's cup, how wrong we were! I opted for a strong defence of Neil in the centre and reliable Mike to his left with Woodsie patrolling the right. Ali and myself in midfield with Mac up top.
The whites started off well, with Mac and Ali linking up beautifully. Our first goal came when Ali did well down the left and put in a good ball in for Mac who finished expertly into the roof of the net. We soon doubled our lead with more good link-up play from Ali and Mac with one of the two scoring,
The yellows however started to get back into the game, pulling a goal back through Gary (I think) who managed to beat Kenny at his near post. I started to get abit worried when they managed to pull another goal back via Andy Eyres who marked his comeback with a well taken shot. The game seemed to be pretty equal, with the yellows probably enjoying more possession. Our defence was solid throughout the game and kept Gary at bay much to my delight (and to Ken's too), he was only let out of Neil's back pocket in the changing rooms after the game.
It was the combination of Ali and Mac that won the game for us, scoring 6 goals between them I think with Ali getting 4 and Mac netting 2.
Unfortunately I cant remember all of the goals but Mac's two were identical with Ali producing a cross and Mac converting them. I was reminded how much ive missed being on the same team of Ali, who had a fantastic game, scoring a great one on one against the yellows keeper Laurie, thanks to a great through ball from Mac. He also scored from a good shot which left my dad (who is usually a cat in goal) with no chance. I can't recall Ali's other two goals but he set me up when he rounded the keeper and squared to me where I couldn't miss. Another goal came when I put a cross in which hit the post, rolled across the line and then hit Laurie and went in. A game to forget for you Dad.
Its very hard to choose my man of the match as everyone in the whites team had a great game and put a shift in, but it has to be between Ali and Mac for their superb link up play. I think Mac pips it because he'd older. lol!
