Match Report
Written by Dave WoodsWhat is it about having to take a turn picking sides that causes so many moans and groans...or is it just me? Having duly upheld club tradition by complaining about having to pick I was pleasantly surprised at how strong (on paper and in the changing room - this an important distinction) the team I eventually decided upon was looking. One or two of the opposition seemed to agree and the first half, with the wind behind us, went very much in our favour apart from the proliferation of missed chances leaving us to face the wind in the second half with a slender lead of 1-0 courtesy of a chance created by Andy for Gary. It was by no means one-way traffic though with the Whites Dave, Richie and Ross looking menacing on the break! As is becoming traditional I, as captain and not too sure how my right knee, even more heavily strapped than usual having wrenched it quite badly the previous weekend, was going to hold out, took the first turn in goal. I quickly discovered that it was painful to put my full, considerable, weight on that knee and as a consequence fumbled several straightforward balls into our penalty area much to the chagrin of my erstwhile teammates and earning me a stern lecture from Mac as we changed ends for the second half - he approached me with hands raised and as I attempted to return what I thought was a 'high-five' he waved his in hands in front of my face and said " Use the bloody things" - or something of that nature!
It was only as I reached the goal and faced the wind that I realised how strong the wind actually was.
I would like to say that it was this factor alone that cost us the game but in truth it was the Whites ability to raise their game contiguous with the Yellows inability to turn chances into goals and perform the relatively simple process of clearing the ball and marking the opponents.
The Whites scored for times in the second half and we missed several chances and hit the post twice! The only consolation for me was seeing the opposing Captain's black-eye at the end of the game - not the sort of strike I was hoping for Andy Smith but worth seeing again on Match of the Day!
Man of the Match: Several good performances and goals particularly Ross' back post header but I think Andy Eyres throughout the game found space with ease and in the second half in particular used that space to great effect and deserves the award.
