Match Report
Written by Mark AustinAfter the disappointment of last week's abandoned game, a bumper turnout of 23 players turned up on a rainy night at Vauxhalls. It was also a special occasion, Blake's birthday! The stand down list was dusted off and Geoff, Blake and Ali were sent packing. Happy birthday Blake, now f*@k off.
As Gary and I had previously picked with 10-a-side, we were selected to pick again for the second leg of our tie. 5-2 down from the first, I decided an attacking side full of skill, flair, and goals was needed. Unfortunately I had to pick from the names that had turned up.
From the start we had a balanced side with a solid formation, Neil, Trevor and Alan forming the cultured defence, Andy Smith providing the class up front, and everyone else running around in the middle.
We soon got our chance to take the lead as Brian tripped over the ball (his own fault for not pumping them up properly) allowing Dave to nip in and steal possession. He accelerated through the gap in the defence and, giving Ken the eyes, slotted it past him into the corner. I don't know if Ken could actually see far enough to notice but still, it was a cool finish.
The pace of the whites was proving effective and soon after, Chris caught Dave Woods in possession, broke away from the defence and powered an unstoppable finish off the bottom of the post into the goal.
Our third goal of the night came from a corner which deflected high into the air. While everyone else stood and watched, Andy Smith stayed alert and was able to challenge Ken for the ball as it fell in front of goal. He did enough to prevent Ken from taking it cleanly and Dave was on hand to score an easy finish for his second of the night.
It was now looking comfortable and there were very few clear chances for the yellows. You could tell we were comfortable because Dave G had only moaned at us 47 times. With the reassurance of our wise keeper, we continued to press and got the crucial fourth goal. An interception in midfield saw the ball pass to Dave who then turned and completed his hat-trick with an arrowed shot into the bottom corner.
MOM would have to be Dave for his goals however Trevor was also outstanding and didn't put a foot wrong all night.
