The match report for this game is of little consequence to the matters that took place in the changing room before the game. I personally like tradition, I think it adds something to events and brings memorable moments or in our case create enough banter to last a life time.
The scene, it was my turn to be captain against Matt and it was his first time as being captain. Now being a newbie and having first pick I was thinking this could be somewhat of an advantage as we all know that newbie captains make rookie mistakes and pick their friends instead of the best players. However, on this occasion an assistant manager turns up to assist in the picking of players.
The assist manager will remain nameless (Mark Austin) and proceeded to ensure that this was going to be a fair and even contest. Yes the game was going to be competitive, which it was but this robbed us of future years of banter i.e. Brian picking Dave as first pick, who can forget.
Having read the Saracens have been fined £5m and docked 35 points for a far less crime than supporting a newbie pick and I am thinking along the lines of 50 points and a player valuation of zero.
As the sides were even on the picking board it turned out to be a really competitive game. Nick, Steve, Laurie formed the basis of a solid back line but were against Jonny, Jay and Ben. The midfield was keenly contested between Gary, Mark and Ali v Blake and Dave was up against Noel, Paul and Brian.
The game flowed with the whites using the pressing tactic and the yellows trying to use the speed of Dave, Gary and Ali to hit them on the break. This seem to work quite well and we never looked in trouble and took a one nil lead. This is how it stayed for quite a way into the game and then Matty came out of goal. This slightly swung the game in favour of the whites and the equaliser soon came. However, the yellows quickly responded with a well worked counter attacking goal. A third and fourth goal followed. However, the whites were not finished and two blistering shots (Gary if it touches you it is an own goal) made it 4-3 going into the final minutes. A few nervy minutes later and the buzz went for a keenly contested 4-3 to the yellows.
An excellent game of football and man of the match to Nick for using his experience and nipping in at vital times to prevent crosses and shots and defending against the younger generation. We have also created a new rule for handball for Paul. The silhouette also includes two foot above his head.
