Match Report

Written by Brendan Crilley

A final game with all to play for. Bren's inferior goal difference meant a draw or a win handed the title to him with Andy needing nothing less than a win. Although Andy is required to write the report, I suggested that I do this as a way of congratulating him on his league victory.

Well done. Simply great. I’m not bitter or upset even slightly, I didn't want to win anyway @&£*#**##ck off t@&¥#*

I did smile once when your round came to £70 !!

Moving on:
The teams were very balanced despite the loss of Richie to a mysterious illness (believed to resemble a females thumb print developing on his brow) and Sylvain rocking up with a minute to spare and ruining Bren's pick which had Sylvain as his first pick to counter the threat of Speedy Gonzales, sorry, Gary.

Andy had his tactics spot on and the pace to counter when yellow attacks broke down. Bren opted for the "law of averages approach" choosing Jay and Andy H (neither of whom had never been on Bren's winning team throughout the season) after convincing speeches given by both in the team car while journeying to the match. Apparently Andy H was scoring a hat trick while waving to my kids and shouting "we'll bring the trophy home for daddy" and Jay suggesting a shoot on sight policy! Lads we lost 4 nil. >:(

To the game:
The yellows sat deep to counter the threat of Whites speed and decided to keep passing the ball to the whites to increase the tension. Paul clearly peaking in the last game with his goal and developing a slide rule passing capability, out for a throw. He remained solid however in his defensive prowess and his huge boots borrowed from Sideshow Bob created havoc for the whites who couldn't find a way over them. It became attack versus defence for those opening 15 minutes and a sublime header from the very busy Nick giving the whites a deserved lead. Bren was on form making several saves with his hands, legs, nose and a very special one from point blank range for Nick which struck his brow and went over the bar. To quote the attacking whites Jonny, "no one should be able to make saves like them". Thanks mate, £20 is in the post!

The yellows stepped up the pitch and camped in the whites half and for twenty minutes a goal was coming but didn't arrive. Jay hit the crossbar and Tom headed wide with several chances and Andy E in goal even having time to juggle circusesque (just made that word up) to mock the striking prowess of Dave O. The goal didn't come and a break away whites attack left Bren stranded for a quick fire passing move and easy finish to give the whites a two goal lead. To be fair this was one of many break away attacks that the whites had during this period of yellow dominance but which Nick was capable of converting into rugby penalty kicks with a clear misunderstanding that those goals don't count as two points!

The yellows never lost heart but the speed and fitness of the whites started to show. Mark A pulled up lam due to his constant never say die defending and Bren ended up in defence hoping that his sheer presence would be like a huge round about in the middle of defence and force the whites wide. He even managed to bully Chris wide and trick him into over running the ball with calm trickery (sorry Chris but I had to mention it, truth is, I was knackered and the ball just stopped with me).

The yellows floundered and the whites dominated in the later minutes of the game taking the scoreline to 4 and perhaps not fully reflecting the balance and endeavours of the yellows.

The whites were worthy winners and Andy E the worthy league champion. The league would have been his already had he not been docked two points earlier in the season for his failed report, but recovering from a six point deficit is a clear indication of great form and team selection. Bren will look back to the two back to back games when his team had led by two goals at a half way point only to lose as perhaps being the key turning points and perhaps his Keegan esq "I'd love it if we beat them" prior to this last game smacked Geordie similarity and poor luck at a time of need. But who am I kidding, Congratulations to Andy E on a deserved championship with equal points but superior goal difference (just wanted to mention that) and a very genuine thank you to the lads in yellow for the effort and honesty in defeat. I'm proud to have selected you for the final league game and had confidence that you could get the victory I needed. It wasn't to be, but thank you anyway (meant without sarcasm).

Well done to all seasons performances by all players and congratulations to those finishing in the Champions League spots. Perhaps room for a three match play off in future seasons as a seasons finale??

Man of the Match was going to be Andy for a captains performance and goal, but it is Nick for his tireless running and two goals while managing to allow Bren his save of the season and giving us all a good laugh while skying the ball from three feet several times after finding all five of the only bobbles on the pitch!
