Match Report

CAPTAINS CUP 1ST ROUND

Written by Harvey Baird

Odd numbers for the encounter and difficult decision to either go with first pick or extra man. Close call but decided to go with extra man. On paper sides looked fairly even, Gary's side looked liked they had the legs and hopefully the extra man would mitigate the extra legs for my side.

The game started and the paper turned into reality. The two teams were searching for an opening but good organisation limited both sides to tame efforts on goal. During this period the whites extra man where always giving us the edge in possession. Eventually this slight dominance turned into a two goal lead about half way through the match (Ritchie for one goal and Ben for the other goal).

All seemed relatively calm at that point but two fairly quick goals from Peter levelled the scores. From that point onwards the whites lost shape and control of the game and the yellows extra legs started to turn the game towards them. However, on a reaper counter attack Matt (guest player) scored a well worked move and moved the whites into the 3-2 lead. The score remained like this until the last couple of minutes when the whites just completely collapsed.

From a corner I asked Ritchie to defend the front post instead of the back post which he was clinging onto catch his breath (not sure why that would be???). As instructed he crawled across the goal. The ball came in from the corner and who was on the back post but Gary to head in the goal. If the goal was a towering header, I could accept that but it was actually a diving header, where was the marking???

The next two minutes were just a disaster. A mistake from the kick off and Gary was through to score a goal and almost the same thing happened on the next kick off for Nick to score the firth goal. So from 3-2 up with a couple of minutes to go the whites lost 5-3.

Good luck to Gary in the captains cup.

MOM, not Ritchie. Difficult to pick out a star performer for the yellows as they all had a very good game but for the two goals to get them back into the game, the award goes to Peter.

One last point, changing rooms back open and most importantly hot showers. For new members who have not experienced the changing rooms. We usually are allocated the middle changing rooms facing the gym. Register on the picking board before 7.50pm and be careful outside the changing room at 7.49pm, as you may get run over by Paul parking his car for the 7.50pm cut off.
