With the final falling the week after the end of season do all the pre-match talk was about who was the most pissed and does everyone really dance worse than they play footy ball?
The picking board was full, as the match also marked the first game of the season, and enthusiasm at check in was high. Brian gracefully standing down and Gary standing up as Blake dropped out late after consulting the book of excuses
Nick had first pick as he was (controversially) rated a B seed player - surely rising to an A this year with his new found centre forward prowess??
With the standard now so high picking is now tougher than ever but we both came out happy with our selections. Until Harvey pointed out I had picked Jay and so had we had 'no f*$!ing chance' of winning, and my confidence dropped!
Straight from kick off it was obvious that there was going to be little space as it 9 vs 9. Nathan and Cush experiencing their first competitive game as the match had an extra edge from some of the smaller games over the summer.
The whites had the advantage of youth (Paul excluded) and pace (Paul excluded again) in their team and for the first 10 minutes they made it count. Gary and Jonny carrying the ball up the pitch with speed and pinning the yellows back. The early dominance probably deserved a goal. Only a trademark point blank tip onto the bar from Bren keeping the scores at zero each.
The yellows grew in confidence and slowly grew into the game. Sylvan (the real pogba) began to get the ball moving in midfield and we started to get in and amongst the opposition area. The next 15 minutes were tight with nothing to separate the teams. Fittingly a set piece broke the deadlock. A wicked throw in to the near post from Chris was difficult to defend and in the right area for Tom to glance onto the under side of the bar and sneak over the line. 1-0 yellows
After another 5 minutes, Nick had seen enough, and wanting to get away from Mike's whinging at the back he took the captains initiative and brought himself out of goal. Sticking himself upfront the decision paid off in no time. As the cross came from the right the initial header dropped into the area and he pounced onto the lose ball and stuck it in the corner. 1-1
But within a couple of minutes, the old adage of being most vulnerable just after scoring seemed to come true for the whites. After some powerful running from Tom through the middle of the pitch the ball popped up for Jay to acrobatically prod into an empty net. 2-1 to yellows
I couldn't breath a sigh of relief yet though. The whites once again pressed and dominated possession. Often Andy H collected the ball and found Andy E in pockets of space in the midfield positions. Harvey and Neil stayed rock solid at the back and nothing effective got through.
Richie was proving the outlet at right back from numerous goal kicks. With his long balls being held up majestically for the next 20 minutes by Tom. And with 5 minutes remaining he collected the ball wide on the left and shot early low in to the corner. 3-1 yellows who saw the rest of the game out until the final whistle.
Commiserations the Nick but with youth on your side you will surely get another crack it in the future
Thanks to all the yellows as I was pretty terrible on the night so was dragged to victory by your efforts
Motm goes to Tom for his all round great performance up front.
