Cush vs Gary De Gea
Aggregate 0-3
2nd leg
I had a feeling something wasn't quite right when Bren put in a "late call" on Monday morning's check in and then I was devastated to hear he couldn't play due to illness. I knew the writing was on the wall for me to be captain this week and go in goal!
Unlike the first match Cush and I took our time with picking our teams - not for any reason other than the fact we struggled with the names and who guest 1&2 were. Although Cush was eager to fill his left back position, I wonder if he had some master tactics in mind. My plan was to make sure I had Graham in the team hoping his 100% record would get me the win! I had to check Harvey's fitness before kick off following his nose job, he told me he obviously can't head the ball. (Which I later found out he meant he will only head the ball to try to score a goal - good to see where my defender's head is at!)
The yellows got off to a flying start and were awarded with their high press as they won the ball back to put in a low cross for Jay to side foot it into a gaping goal! I was not ready for that. The white steadied the ship and began to play some intricate quick passing. We threatened their goal with efforts against the crossbar and post before Jonny set up Gary P to level the game after some good work down the right hand side. We continued to press for the lead and the chance came to Andy to finish calmly into the net.
From then on it was all yellow pressure. They peppered our goal with long throws, corners and long shots. I had to channel my inner De Gea and made a few saves with my legs which Harvey quickly reminded me I can also use my hands. We managed to hold firm with some excellent defending from the whole team but we struggled to get out of our own half. As the game came to a close Stewy turned neatly to score our 3rd and further kill off the game minutes later with his 2nd of the night.
After the game I caught up with Captain Cush to get his thoughts on the match:
"My team was wasteful in possession and turned the ball over too much. Your team was quick on the counter and put more shots on target. I hate going in goal- glad Jay conceded he was having a stinker and let me come out for 15!" I questioned why he was so keen to fill the left back spot which he admitted he got his Paul's mixed up!
Overall I thought it was a very even game, well done to both teams! Special mentions go to Jonny for the 3 assists and taking out Cush. It was a close call for the MOTM - I thought Andy played well linking our defence and attack but my MOTM goes to Graham for his defensive skills and calm distribution from the back.
