Match Report

Written by Andy Smith
6 a side and the only game on was a Captains Cup replay, seemingly unfair on Laurie as last time it was 10 a side when he had first pick. For the first 20 minutes or so, Yellows besieged the white's goal, hitting the woodwork 3 times, missing good chances and Ken performing heroics in goal. As often the case, whites began to think it could be their night and grew in confidence. Their first shot from Gary took a deflection, wrong footing Woodsy in goal but somehow he changed direction, dived and tipped it round the post. We felt the earth move ( literally!). The warnings were there, whites put in 3 quick goals - might be wrong but I think Brian, Chris and Gary - and whites were in shock. However, with never say die Sheen senior moving forward, Smith and Sheen x 2, combined twice with Geoff providing the finish. Noel then took Woody's advice to shut his eyes on his next attempt and half volleyed home in fine style. Yellows could have snatched it but for a great save by Dave G from Blake.

As it is World Cup, some inevitable comparisons . Yellow's tried to play like Brazil 70, white's Argentina 66. I sit typing with ice packs on right Achilles ( Laurie) and left knee (Chris) - I am not sure who had the weaker excuse "I did not expect you to be so nimble" - Laurie, "I was already sliding" - Chris. May I remind members of the rules on no slide tackles or tackles from behind! So 3-3. I left the pitch thinking I had lost on away goals but of course that does not apply in the cup and we should have had penalties. We will have to think of a suitable decider - pistols at dawn or something.
