Match Report

Written by Brendan Crilley

As the season draws to a close and Tom clings to top spot, the first of the final four games gave 2nd place Bren a chance to overtake at the top. Equal sides in numbers, the game provided balance with both sides finding the other difficult to breakdown.

The whites played a 2-2-2 formation which allowed Cush to operate in the midfield and provide Jay and Dave the freedom of attack, while Last seasons winner Andy E tirelessly covered every blade of grass, lending hand to defence and having opportunity with shots at the other end. Paul H and Chris marshalled the defence well, Paul carrying on last weeks form, keeping the ever dangerous Richie quiet for the best part of 45 minutes and Chris flying up the wing to support midfield and the attack.

The yellows attacked with a ploy of Richie upfront supported by Gary W who battled hard in midfield, supported by the ever willing Jonny and covered well by Neil, Harvey and Blake in defence.

Opportunities came and went for both teams. Tom making two decent saves early on and the whites conspiring to miss the opportunity of open goals due to Dave having his boots on the wrong feet and Jay enjoying a 'swan lake' pirouette while attempting a Gazza flick and turn, but hitting the volley high over the bar and knocking Armstrongs flag over on the moon.

The game ebbed and flowed with both teams making space and having equal chances, but the whites were undone on the counter as Harvey slotted home from close range, past the grasping hand of Bren.

If this game had ended nil nil no one could have argued. If the whites had won it would have been as equally a fair result as the eventual 1-0 to a relieved Toms yellows.

And so into the last 3 matches with all to play for. Tom clear at the top by three points from Bren and Gary W and Jonny still in with a shout, Tom will know that he has a possible chance to win the title if next weeks result and team selection go for him.

MoM is Andy E who covered every blade of grass in defence of his own title and put in a champions performance.
