Match Report

Written by Andy Eyres

Having it announced on the WhatsApp group it was my turn to pick, and also reminding me I was 9-0 down just ruined my dinner to be honest! Having it announced by the very person who ruined the first leg as a contest, was even worse!

It was simply a case of going out there and trying to win the game, my chances of progressing through to the captain's cup were already gone thanks to Gary (or do I blame Jamie?) getting sparked out after 2 minutes of the first leg with a ball to the face!

Anyway, onto the return leg – I went for first pick, and took the risk for the extra man not counting for that much, and hoping more pace and mobility in the midfield would serve up a 10-0 win for me!

With no goalies available, I made the sacrifice, and stayed in goal, a risk given my skills between the sticks (more on that later)

The whites started strongly, with Richie in his customary right back starting position...it was just a case of knowing how long he was going to remain there? We were soon 1-0 up, some good work in the middle with Cush and Nick, and I think Nathan grabbed the first goal. Not too long after we were 2-0 up, and we were looking comfortable and solid, and a few shouts of 'only 8 more lads' were heard! I was hoping Jay would find his hot scoring streak and bag another 4 goals (and not get MOM) for me, but it wasn't to be tonight.

The yellows did begin to carry a threat, with a few fierce shots from Nick & Jamie I managed to push to safety, and the huge fence doing its job admirably when faced with James' attacking threat down the right! Soon however, the yellows pulled one back, with a deflected OG from Nick Evans caught me out and it was now 2-1. The game remained competitive, and given Neil's rant in his match report last week, was seemingly fair and honest,  and Paul didn't handball it either.

We were soon 3-1 up, and given my position in goal, didn't see much of it, or remember who scored, but claims of 2 spectacular own goals from Blake are enough to convince me of his contribution.

3-2 and the yellows were back in it, with a goal from James or Jamie, don't care which one it was either! Sh*te goal anyway. Yellows were starting to build more attacks, but some frustrations were building, as end product wasn't there, as James' attempts to seek out passes to Nick up top needed more work.

Much hilarity ensued as Blake got his second of the game in his own net 4-2 and by this time Richie's venture had him supporting Jay up front, and Neil covering right back and centre half duties.

It was a nervous last 10 minutes and the fault lies directly with me on this one...I am renowned as probably the sh*ttest keeper at the club (or second sh*ttest) but felt like I had done OK so far, as I couldn't do much about the first two goals, but as Blake shaped to shoot from the edge of the box, I jumped high, given average trajectory of a Sheen attempt is usually 30ft high – but his pea roller caught me off guard, and what should have been a simple control, ran under my foot! 4-3 and that was to be the final score in the end – a win to restore some pride, but the 9-0 drubbing earlier in the season, was a bridge too far – well done to Gary, and good luck in the CC.

MOM on his return from injury – Cush – covered well at the back noting of Richie's habitual dereliction of defensive duties, and effective in attack also.
