Match Report

Written by Harvey Baird

First point of the match report - being captain two weeks on the run and not even in sight of the title. There needs to be some sort of rule that this can’t happen.

Luck of the draw and Davo O was the other captain in the first round of the Duffers cup. With people declaring their fitness availability early it turned out that we had four goalkeepers. This meant that the picking of the players was like a game of chess and trying to second guess what the other captain was going to do. I was quite happy with the way the side and was hoping that we had enough running capacity in the side as it was going to be a hard night given it was six against six.

The game started with a VAR decision. The ball was kicked off before everyone was ready and Bren decided to test how wet the ball was and throw the ball in the net. VAR decided the ball was kicked off before the whistle was blown. The overall game was fairly tight all game with each team having spells of dominance. The yellows had control for the first 20 minutes and the middle period was roughly even and the whites gained the slight upper hand in the last 20 minutes.

In terms of the score line it was 1-1 for quite a period of time and then the magic happened. Paul H needed to go in goal and Bren stepped out to play in the defensive line, using the words, you shall not pass. I believe Dave's calf will testify to the policy. Bren then used his speed over 3m to close the gap to attackers and his heavy breathing tactics to scare players to pass the ball backwards before being clattered.

At the other end of the pitch Nathan, Andy and Jay began peppering Jamie in goal. To be fair to Jamie he was repelling the shots with good saves or illegal sliding challenges. However, he could not stop two rapid goals to take us into a 3-1 lead (I note Andy E posted on whatapps that he scored a goal but I am getting the impression that the dubious goal committee will need to review the goal).. Gary W scored a break away goal late on but the whites replied quickly with a quick break away goal. The final 10 minutes were fairly comfortable for the whites, as "you shall not pass" stopped further goals.

Tough game given it was 6 a side and several players carrying injuries but enjoyable none the less.

MOM, difficult one as close game and everyone played their part but I am going to give it to Jamie,  marginally over Nathan, as he made a couple of fine one and one saves that kept the score line close and the game. Thank you for the injured players turning up and getting a game on.
