Match Report

Duffers Cup Final

Written by Chris Stewart

With one game left before the end of season presentation, two cups remained unsettled. With Ed Johnson on another international Golfing trip, there was no chance the Captains cup final was going to be decided... not unless it was gifted to Gary Wong due to Eds absence... But this was NEVER going to happen!

It fell to me and Andy to play the duffers cup final as Brian was still nursing his shoulder injury. Not wanting to make club history and be the only player to win such an accolade 3 times consecutively, I'm pretty sure brian was perfectly happy to milk every week out of his shoulder injury until the clock ran down to play his final match. Well done Brian. Mission accomplished. It was me or Andy.

Now to the game - Andy won the toss and chose first in a game of even sides. Opting for a goal keeper from the start, the sides were still equally matched. The game was very tight with only a few chances for either side. With 18 players on the field; there was no space in the final 3rd for either team.

However, Andy did go 1-0 up about halfway through the game with a towering header from Nick Evens. I take full responsibility for the this... Stepping out to catch a cross... pretty much in no man's land, leaving an empty net to head in a goal.

We still had the best possession by far, but we just couldn't get near the goal. I shouted up to Jonny to get one of his shots off as he has done so many times season... but he replied that it was "too hard" as the defenders were onto him pretty quickly... however, it must of stuck in his mind... 10 mins later he put a bullet into the bottom left corner from long range! Well done Jonny 1-1!

I then almost knocked myself out by running into the cross bar from a long range lob attempt by Andy (off my line again). Fortunately, the ball went over the bar and I escaped with minor bruising... we may have required the club medics again further umpteenth time this season.

The game is ended 1-1.

*Penalties*
I saved Andy's first penalty and got off to a flying start. However, Andy quickly got back into it when I tried to go straight down the middle with my 4th penalty. Other than this, we both knocked in some great penalties. It went sudden death and Andy won 11-10! Well done Andy. Great closely fought match.

Man of the match-Jonny.
Never stopped running, great goal and happy 30th Birthday!
