With Spring in the air and a prolonged absence due to illness, it was good to get back out for some Monday night football.
Having already been pre-warned by Gary W on the playground that it was us picking tonight, I had mentally prepared (extra-large portion of chips for dinner) for 60 minutes in goal and first pick.
6 vs 6 meant plenty of running and it was the whites who started the game brighter with much of the possession and bringing a number of good early saves from Jamie. Some good hold play from Neil despite the constant pressure from Paul H meant it wasn't long before whites found a way through - some lovely link up play between Gary and Neil lead to the opening goal and put the whites 1-0.
Not much between the two sides and it was on the half hour mark that whites doubled their advantage, a lovely through ball from Brian found Gary on the right who played in Neil again to make it 2-0.
A change at the back for the yellows saw a swing in momentum and the pressure finally told with a deflected Gary W shot bringing a deserved goal. Wasn't long after that the scores could've been level as Dave turned in a good cross from the left-hand side but with a great show of sportsmanship self-called a handball.
Yellows continued to press creating good opportunities from corners and crosses with Harvey just guiding one over the crossbar. It was Gary W who came closest to levelling things up with an effort that just didn't curl enough as it flew by the post.
Brian continued to make several important blocks and win key headers at the back and Chris did superbly getting up and down (especially on one leg) to offer support at both ends. It was Tom who clinched the 3rd after timing a great self-imposed move between CB and CF to finish off a move that saw a little bit of breathing space at 3-1 with 15 mins to play.
The yellows weren't done and as Jamie and Gary battled it out in the middle of the park and the whites dropped deeper and deeper, Andy took his opportunity and struck a superb left footed shot into the bottom corner to make it 3-2.
That ensured a nervy last 10 minutes with plenty of last-ditch tackles and blocks as the yellows committed men forward, but the whites held on. Final score: 3-2
MOM: A close call with endless running from Gary P and 2 assists but Neil P gets it after some great hold up play early doors and 2 important goals.
