Match Report

Captains Cup Final

Written by Gary Parker

It had all come down to this. Over 30 years of sibling rivalry, about to be brought to its ultimate conclusion. Only one could be declared champion and all-time best Plus 30 Parker. It was time for the talk to stop and to settle this once and for all!

Our old man Parker also came along to spectate from the sidelines, claiming to be a neutral and refusing to show loyalty to either side. Although I did notice during the game that he was stood down toward the white’s end - I’m not sure if that was a show of support or just because that’s where all the action was!

The yellows edged the early moments in the game. Combining well with some quick football and neat passing, helped by the earlier rain. Gary W orchestrated the game from midfield, with runners Jay, Jamie and Dave applying the forward pressure.

The highlight of the match came after just ten minutes - left-footed Andy Eyres bursting down the unfamiliar right flank, and with his final touch looming, attempted a cross, swinging his right foot at it but nicking it with his left foot first, completely missing, tripping over his own feet and sliding along the ground on his chest. There were cheers all round and I think Andy was laughing on the way down too! One for the comedy reel!

Following that, the whites suffered two goals in quick succession. The first, Dave  pouncing on the ball and slotting it past Bren in goal, and the second from Jamie a minute later - a delightful loft over Bren.

The whites seemed determined to get back into the game after that tough setback, but the sturdy backline of Paul, Antony and Reuben was proving difficult to break down. Paul and Reuben both found their opportunities to go forward too. Reuben taking a great first touch centrally in the whites half and having a shot go just over. Paul in a similar position, having a go at an open goal but again, narrowly over.

One more goal from Dave and a further barrage of opportunities from the yellows seen us hit the post at least four times!

Cush did finally find the space to get a goal back for the whites, rifling it past me in goal to make it 3-1. The whites continued to throw caution to the wind as the game neared the end. Neil abandoning his defensive duties and moving to striker to try and force his team up the pitch. He did just that and Antony in goal was forced into making a few critical saves but the time kept ticking away and the yellows managed to see the game out. 3-1.

Many thanks to my Yellows for such a flawless performance, it was a pleasure to watch while I was in goal.

MOM goes to Antony, who had a commanding presence at centre back in addition to some key saves when he went in goal.

Commiserations bro. I’m sure this was just karma for pushing me off the pitch and into the fence in 2014. :D

And it so turns out that the all-time best Parker title was never really up for grabs after all. According to Dad, we’re both still a long way off his Plus 30 standards - especially since, apparently, he taught us everything we know.
