I had been anticipating being picked for captain over the past few weeks & finally it arrived. Having been given choice, I almost hadn’t realised it was odd sides, and had to check my decision, and went for the extra man - hoping the lower numbers would count for something. Teams looked pretty balanced on paper, but the final score told a different story...
First 20 minutes of the game were pretty uneventful, with both captains choosing to start in goal, they didn’t really have much to do. But on the 20 minute mark, Neil sprung into life and decided this game needed some goals!
He duly toe poked one past me into his own net to give the yellows a 1-0 lead - the quick finish leaving me wrong footed. In fairness to Neil, he almost instantly atoned for his error, by running the entire length of the pitch, having been released with a lovely ball over the top form Ed, and showing strength and speed to shrug off his ‘faster’ brother Gary, dispatched a powerful shot past Tom - 1-1, and so far all contributions by my defensive duo.
Soon after this, my midfield and attack finally woke up & started to tick, and used the extra man and space, to attack swiftly, leaving one way traffic for much of the next 20 mins or so. Jamie, Dave and Gary W each netting in this period to make the game comfortable.
Yellows never really got going all evening, and even with Neil’s help, posed very little threat up front.
I had a brief spell out, enjoying the free flowing attacking football, expertly marshalled by Ed at the back. 2 more goals followed from Jamie and Dave, with our clinical attacking causing problems all evening. 6-1 was the final score, and gives me a rare lead to protect and qualify for the captains cup.
Star man would have to go to Neil - made quick amends for his mistake, and was solid for the rest of the night.
