Match Report

Written by Dave Woods
Down 2-1 from the first leg and Mac has first choice...

Picking went as you'd probably expect for an oversight on my part when I missed the opportunity to pick Blake (senior moment) but I did get Ken!

The early part of the game was dominated by the Whites - defending well and moving the ball with accuracy and alacrity - culminating in a fierce shot from Carl (yes Carl!) hitting the post - but the Yellows held firm with Sheeny in particular in top form at the centre of our defence blunting the very sharp and skilful forward attacking motion of Ben by talking to him about his Lathe at every opportunity and injecting Ben with a very virulent form of Narcolepsy. Our defensive tactic of playing two right backs (my toes are still sore from Phil constantly standing on them as Carl's will be after suffering the full weight of my good self on the set on his left(?) foot) seemed to confuse the Whites a little more than it did us. We took the lead - probably against the run of play when Paul leaped about six feet in the air and stretched his neck like a Padaung woman to glance a well directed corner into the Whites goal! 1-0! We needed another goal and to keep a clean sheet for me to advance into the Captain's Cup and condemn Mac to the ignominy of the Duffers!

That second goal came via the industry of Gary who chased a speculative long ball by Phil (stepping off my toes for the briefest of moments to deliver this raking pass) after it was passed back to the White's 'keeper, Laurie, who, as he cleared the ball, hit Gary in the shins and the ball rebounded into the net. 2-0!

Despite the Whites best efforts as they piled the pressure on in the latter stages of the second half the Yellows, helped by some very wayward shooting from the Whites, some very capable goalkeeping by Ken, sterling defensive work by all the Yellow heroes and the goalpost on a couple of occasions the Yellows did manage to keep a clean sheet and send me into the first round of the Captains Cup!
Tough luck Mac - that second goal was a killer!

MotM - there was a number of outstanding candidates for this honour from both teams but in both the early and late stages of the game when the Whites dominated Geoff Sheen was at his imperious best seeming to draw the ball to his feet and head to effect one clearance after another. Sheeny was my Man of the Match.
