Match Report

Written by Dave Woods
I foolishly passed on selecting Chris (who was excellent) in favour of Dave O. (who was shite); as I had already chosen Gary for pace I decided on Dave as he has been on top form for a good few weeks now. Not my only mistake this particular evening (or indeed in this report as i've just realised I got the colours of the shirts wrong! Edited!).

Despite benefiting from the Cup rules and having first choice and the extra man - as befits my lowly status alphabetically speaking - the Whites dominated the early part of the game as the yellows struggled to control and pass the ball with any degree of proficiency and might have been a couple of goals ahead even at this early stage except for Ken's goalkeeping prowess and the white's own profligacy in front of the Yellow's goal.

Slowly we fought our way back in the game playing the ball well out of defense apart from the several occasions that Chris, plowing a loan furrow up front, managed to chase down and tackle each of our three man defense in turn often in the one move as he chased the ball from one side of the pitch to the other never allowing us time to settle on the ball and play a decisive pass. tI was Chris, inevitably, who scored the first goal and followed that with a second.

The Yellows stubbornly refused to quit and fought their way back into the game with a goal by Gary who chased down a wayward pass and slotted the ball into the White's net with supreme efficiency. The extra man was perhaps starting to tell as we dominated play in the latter stages of the game as the White's either tired or decided that a 2-1 win would be fine by them but as often happens under those circumstances the Yellows scored a second. Unhappily I can't remember who scored the Yellow's second goal or, indeed, if the first goal I mentioned was actually the second! This is due I think not to an early and worrying onset of dementia but entirely to the fact that what happened next has made me want to consign this particular game to ancient history!

I learned long, long ago that if you are the last man defending your goal and you have the opportunity to break up an attack by reading the opponents intentions and making a timely interception the first thing you should do is 'clear your lines' the best and quickest way possible and not to attempt to 'take on' your opponent in a foolhardy effort to keep the ball in play and initiate another attack in the hope of winning the game, the two points and passing through to the next round of the Captain's Cup! Now some of our players are more than capable of doing just that and at one time (at least forty years ago) I might even have succeeded myself but not now, not at 65, very overweight, crippled by the injuries sustained over the footballing years and as slow as a Woody! Needless to say my attempt to do just that was foiled by Neil who won the ball as I tried to take it past him on the by-line and he promptly and accurately passed the ball to the UNMARKED Chris for him to complete his hat-trick!

My apologies Yellows; my congratulations to Bob....Final score 3-2 to the Whites

MoM: Difficult to choose really - I don't think anybody played particularly badly for the Yellows (well apart from Dave O. that is...) so I'm going to give it to Paul for his passion!
Oh almost forgot...I nutmegged Brian!
