Hewson Smashes Nine Year Record
In his first season at the club, James Hewson has broken the league record for most consecutive losses.
James has played 12 league games so far this season and since winning in his third league match, has been on a run of nine consecutive losses.
The previous record (8) which stood for 9 years, was held by Ian McKay, set in 2014. Two other players had equalled Ian's tally, Ken Hughes (2015) and Blake Sheen (2020) but none had surpassed it.
On the night of his potential record breaking match, James decided to pass up the opportunity to be a captain and instead put his faith in Ross Cornford and Chris Stewart to pick sides that would hopefully see an end to his disastrous run. Despite a valiant effort from his team, with James also scoring his first goal of the season to put his team 2-1 ahead, two late goals from Neil Parker and his (former) best mate Nick Smith, etched his name into the record books.
It was concluded in the pub after the game that James's forfeit for breaking the record would be a round of drinks for each game he had lost. Blake Sheen has already confirmed he will be booking a week off work to get over the hangover.
James has also set a new record for the most consecutive losses across all competitions - 10, which included losing the christmas curry friendly match. Suprising to many, he did win the Christmas quiz, but sadly this wasn't allowed to count as a win to break his streak.
Paul Hackett, who went 16 games without a win in 2022, did offer some comforting words to James, saying “James, I just wanted to offer some reassurance, as a fellow record holder. It gets you down when you lose so many games. You wonder is it a cruel coincidence, or is it just you. I can set your mind at rest .... It's you!!”
Paul will also be delighted that one of the two wooden spoon contender places has now almost certainly been filled, with James's point average currently at an unimaginable 0.17 (also a new record!).
The lowest recorded point average at the end of a season is 0.40, set by Andy Eyres in 2017/18.
Should James get 5 draws from his next 5 matches, it would see him lift his average to 0.41. So there’s still plenty of time to turn it around and avoid yet another record, with roughly 18 league games remaining.
